A program „They must live” (tłum. ,,One muszą żyć’) was made in response to the dramatic state of the Polish health service. We were inundated with hundreds of letters asking for help in saving the lives and health of children with leukemia, so we have taken another challenge to co-finance the existing graft positions and creating new ones.
The program ,,They must live’’ is aimed to help children with cancer. In the program, there are supported Hematology and Pediatric Oncology Centers located in the whole Poland. Financial support is spent on repairs and constructing, buying specialized medications and equipment. In this program they have funded the construction of the Oncology and Hematology Clinic in Gdansk.
Main funding:
• 370,000 DM for Hematology and Children’s Proliferative in Wroclaw (thanks to this money, it was possible to purchase three beds for transplants, and thus, to save every year lives of thirty children, who do not have compatible family donors),
• 160,000 PLN was donated to the Association of Parents whose Children have leukemia. It built Oncology and Children’ Hematology at the Clinic Hospital in Szczecin, and ultrasound device for the Regional Hospital in Cracov,
• Oncology medicines worth more 100,000 USD for the Central Clinical Hospital of the Military Medical Academy,
• Fiat cars for the two hospices – Oncology in Warsaw and the Children’ in Otwock,
• 500,000 PLN – for Hematology and Children’ Oncology Pediatric Institute in Poznań to build Day Stay Hospital for children with leukemia and to supply the equipment of Bone Marrow Transplation Unit,
• 10,000 PLN – for Hematology and Oncology Clinic in Katowice to supply the equipment on transplantation division,
• 43,000 PLN for Mother and Child Institute in Warsaw for the purchase of a rotating microtome for histopathological diagnosis of cancer to children,
• Fiat Punto – for Divine Providence Hospice in Wołomin,
• Association of Parents of Children with leukemia received 55,000 PLN to build the Department of Oncology and Pediatric Hematology at the Clinical Hospital in Szczecin,
• Hematology and Pediatric Oncology Clinic in Cracov received the unit for pediatric research ( market value is about 20,000 PLN),
• 60 children attended the trip to Copenhagen after their remission of leukemia,
• Association of Parents of Children with leukemia received another 100.000 PLN to build the Department of Oncology and Hematology at the Children’s Clinical Hospital in Szczecin,
• We passed oncology medicaments (Gemzar) of 250.000 PLN to three Oncology Hospitals in Cracov, Zakopane and Lublin,
• Division of Pediatric Oncology Hospital in Lodz received a check for an amount of 10.000 PLN,
• Hematology and Pediatric Oncology Clinic in Cracov - 100.000 PLN,
• Hospice for Children in - Renault Kangoo,
• St. John the Evangelist Hospice in Szczecin - Ford Transit,
• 60 children after leukemia attended the cruise on the Swedish Gotland Isle,
• Association for children with Cancer in – 50,000 PLN,
• In September 2001, there was opened Division of Day Stay for Children with Cancer, which was mostly funded by the Foundation (550,000 PLN),
• Division of Pediatric Oncology Hospital in Lodz, received a check for 10.000 PLN,
• Oncology Hospice in Warsaw – 100,000 PLN,
• Hematology and Oncology Clinic in Cracov – 100,000 PLN,
• "Pro Salute" Hospice in Bedzin - KIA car from ZOZ,
• 150 children with cancer participated in a special audience with the Pope at the Vatican, where they travelled with Jolanta Kwaśniewska,
• Hematology and Pediatric Oncology Clinic in Bydgoszcz - 301.373,00 PLN,
• Association for Children in Lublin - 10.000,00 PLN,
• "Auxilium" Association w Nyssa - 10.000,00 PLN to repair the floor in an oncology hospice,
• 600 pieces of sheets with a value of 30.012,00 PLN for several hospices and shelters for the elderly people ( Oncology Hospice in Warsaw on Ursynow, West pommorian Hospice in Szczecin, Care and Welfare Department in Reszel, SP ZZOD in Augustow), amount of 62.565,00 PLN for Regional Hospital at Smoluchowski Street in Gdansk to fund the treatment of B. Kasprzycki,
• the amount of 200.000,00 PLN for the Foundation of the West Pommorian Hospice for Children in Szczecin to make renovations and adaptive works for and area of 140 m2. Hospice provides support for terminally ill children and the 24h free assistance in particularly severe medical cases.
In 2002, the Foundation has set for itself an extremely difficult task for the future. Indeed, it decided to build an entirely new, standing alone Clinic of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the Medical Academy in Gdansk in the place of yet functioning, narrow and not very child-friendly department of pediatric oncology.
Calendar of Clinic creation:
• 1 June 2003 – the cornerstone laying (until the end of 2003, 767.912,00 PLN were given for constructing)
• 8 January 2004 – particle ceremony suspension, putting the building in the rough
• April 2004 – start of finishing and elevation works (in 2004 an intensive construction and finishing works were conducted, giving 3.386.707,00 PLN on it)
• October / November 2004 – June 2005 – panting an interior by the students of the Painting Laboratory, Wall and Stained Glass Painting Studio and the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk.
• 3 June 2005 – was an official opening of the Clinic
Day 3 June 2005 was one of the most important days in the 10-year history of the Foundation „Communication without Barriers”. That day, a new building was put into service, which became the headquarters of the Department of Hematology and Pediatric Oncology of Pediatric, Hematology, Oncology and Endocrinology Clinic of Pediatric Institute of Medical Academy in Gdansk. The new clinic has changed current, very bad conditions of treating children with cancer.
In total, Foundation gave 4.669.245, 00 PLN to build the Clinic, in 2005 there was given 514.625,00 PLN.
